We appologize for the length of our by-laws, but we are trying to cover all possible conditions.

 

           6th Ind. Vol. Inf. Co. A 

                   By-laws

 

1. Name:                                                                                                                       

     We shall be the 6th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company A.

     Our mission is to educate ourselves and others about the daily life of people during the Civil War through Reenactments and Living Histories.

2. Membership:

     The membership is open to men and women regardless of race, creed, or religion, national origin. All females portraying soldiers must attempt to hide their gender.

     All members are required to have on file with the Company all necessary paperwork including, but not limited to: Reenactor Application, Enlistment, Liability Release Waiver, Parental Permission ( if needed), Confidential Medical Information, and proof of Identity.  Social Security numbers are not requested.

Members must attend at least 3 events and be at least 16 years of age to be active members and  eligible to vote on any issue brought before the group.  Parental Permission form must be signed by parent or guardian for all minors under 18 years of age. All under 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or adult supervisor at events as we are not responsible for their safety.

Only voting (Active) members may hold office in the 6th Indiana.  Only voting (Active) members may suggest events or items of concern to be voted on by the group. 

All voting (Active) member's votes are equal to all other members vote, regardless of rank or other status.

All Musicians or other child reenactors over the age of 12 years must be proficient in the use of their instrument and/or prop they are using during reenactments.  An adult mentor will facilitate their participation at all times during reenactments.

There will be no dues unless they are reinstated by the active members.

All members Active or Associate must behave in a socially acceptable manner at all times.  Military courtesy will be observed at all events.

A member may be asked to leave the 6th Indiana, at the request of the group, only after a vote is conducted by a quorum of voting members present at the time the request of separation is made.  Documentation of the reason for separation must be entered into the Company records.  Reinstatement must also be voted on by a quorum of Active members present.

3. Meetings:

The group will plan at least one event and or drill/meeting per month.  Drill can be accomplished during an event, but in months when no events are planned, a designated drill/meeting/social or educational event can be scheduled.  The sign-in "Roster" will suffice as minutes for any gathering of the group. With any attachments and exhibits as needed.

4. Board Members and Officers:

Board members will be Active members, assigned specific duties by the highest ranking officer of the group.  Appointments are to be ratified by a quorum of the voting members present at time of appointment.  Documentation of said appointments will be placed in Company records detailing the appointment.

At such time as the voting membership exceeds 30 members, they may request an Election of Board Members and/or Officers of the group.  Roberts Rules of Order will be in force to determine the procedure and enactment of this request.  Formal minutes will be kept for any such activity. 

All Officers of the 6th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Co. A will be elected/appointed at the year end meeting by a quorum vote of Active members.  Their term of office shall be one year.

Portraying an Officer in the field is separate from being an Officer of the 6th Indiana.

5. Equipment:

Each member of the company is responsible for his/her own equipment.  For a soldier, this consist of the following articles: Dark Blue 4 button Sack Coat, Sky Blue trousers with suspenders, Period shirt, Belt with US buckle, Cap Pouch, Cartridge Box with strap and  US boxplate, US Breast plate, Haversack, Canteen, Brogans, and a cap of your choosing- Kepi, Forage, or Slouch hat.

A 3 banded Musket (Springfield or Enfield) with Bayonet and Frog. 

Optional equipment:  Mess equipment, Tent of White canvas, wooden chest for personal items, Knapsack, knife, wash basin, camp chairs, camping gear, and Campfire cooking utensils.  Any items to change your look (galvanize) into a confederate soldier or Militia.

Civilian members also supply their own equipment, period correct clothing, tents, sleeping gear, eating utensils and any other period correct items to lend authenticity to the encampment. Civilian members are not allowed on the battlefield.

Any borrowed item must be returned to it's owner in the same condition it was received. If it is damaged or lost the borrower is responsible for it's repair/replacement.

Items borrowed from the group may be used for 6 maximum effort events to allow time enough to acquire your own equipment.

New and used items may be purchased from event sutlers, over the internet, or hand made by others.  They must be period correct as possible.  i.e. no zippers, no plastic, no polyester, soda cans, etc.  Coolers or other modern conviences can be concealed by blankets, wood, or other means.

6. Ammunition/ Firing Musket Policy/ Alcohol & Drugs:

All musket fire is controlled by the ranking officer in camp.  There will be no loaded muskets (blank or live) in camp at any time without authorization. No "live" rounds are to be in camp or on your person without authorization of ranking officer present.

There is a zero tolerance policy for Alcohol abuse in Camp or any Public function the Company attends.

Drugs are not tolerated at any time unless prescribed by a Doctor and you have them in a legally marked prescription bottle.  Also the ranking Officer must know of any such drugs present. 

7. Insurance

It is the responsiblility of each member to provide his/her own insurance coverage.  The 6th Indiana will not assume responsiblility in event of accidents or death incurred while member is participating with the 6th Indiana.

 

The by-laws have been approved by the officers and members of the 6th Indiana.  They are subject to change only by a vote of the 6th Indiana members.

These bylaws have been passed by active members on 09-17-2006.
